RARE EARLY SPIERS SMOOTHING PLANE

£395.00

Product Information

VERY RARE 19th century SPIERS of AYR dovetailed steel, SCREW SIDED, coffin-shaped unhandled pattern smoothing plane also stamped T.N for THOMAS NORRIS. It is well known in the tool world that Thomas Norris originally bought planes from Spiers and then retailed them before he actually started making planes himself, this is obviously such an example. This is an early Spiers plane with screwed sides and early type gunmetal lever cap with thin screw. Dark rosewood infill is in pretty decent condition. Comes with a good length round top iron with the backing iron which looks original to me stamped MacKAY BURLEY & HEYS of Glasgow. Good clean metal and a fine mouth. The overall condition of the plane is well above average especially for such an early example. The plane is stamped T.N for THOMAS NORRIS on both the gunmetal lever cap and the front bun, it is stamped SPIERS AYR also on the front bun near the top. VERY RARE.
