19th century Spiers of Ayr coffin-shaped dovetailed steel smoothing plane in pretty decent condition for its age. Gunmetal lever cap with early small Spiers stamp and good dark rosewood infill including open rear handle. I have fitted a full length old replacement slightly tapering iron to the plane which produces a fine mouth. VERY RARE full length 1 3/4" wide Stanley type blade by Robert Sorby of Sheffield. As far as I was aware Robert Sorby didn't make a number 3 size plane or a compass plane so I don't know what this blade was for other than competition for Stanley and Record in the spare blade market. Slight discolouration but nothing serious.
