Pretty decent 1920's Spiers of Ayr dovetailed steel, coffin-shaped smoothing plane in good original condition. Gunmetal lever cap with scroll script stamp and nice clean rosewood infill with open rear handle. No cracks or damage to the rear handle and it also has its full length spur. Original Spiers parallel iron and backing iron. Minor discolouration to the metal mainly to the top of the iron and the back of the backing iron and there is an old hairline crack to the front infill but it is perfectly solid. 2 1/4" wide blade.
A fine example of Scottish toolmaking craftsmanship. This 1920s Spiers of Ayr smoothing plane features a dovetailed steel body with the distinctive coffin shape that defines the maker's premium range. The gunmetal lever cap bears the maker's characteristic scroll script stamp, whilst the rosewood infill remains clean and undamaged with an open rear handle for comfortable control. Equipped with original Spiers parallel iron and backing iron, the 2¼" blade is ready for use. The full-length spur is intact. Minor surface discolouration to the metalwork is consistent with age; a hairline crack to the front infill is cosmetic only and does not affect the plane's structural integrity or performance. A solid, functional tool with authentic period character—ideal for the serious hand plane user or collector of quality vintage woodworking equipment.
